큰고니 - 몸길이 약 1.5m, 펼친 날개의 길이 약 2.4m이다. 암수 모두 순백색이고 어린 새는 회갈색을 띤다. 고니와 비슷하나 부리의 노란색 부분이 더 넓다. 다리는 검정색 또는 짙은 회색이다. 또 헤엄칠 때 목을 굽히는 혹고니(C. olor)와 달리 목을 곧게 세우고 헤엄치며, 혹고니에 비해 분포권(번식지)이 북극 삼림대를 크게 벗어나지 않는다. 한국에는 겨울새로 찾아와 황해도 옹진군 호도, 장연군 몽금포, 함경남도 차호, 강원도 경포대 및 경포호, 낙동강 하구, 전라남도 진도·해남 등지에서 겨울을 나고 돌아간다.

5월 하순에서 6월 상순에 걸쳐 한배에 3∼7개의 알을 낳는다. 알은 하루 걸러 낳으며 다 낳은 지 3일 정도 지나서 암컷 혼자서 품는다. 품은 지 35∼42일이면 부화한다. 먹이로는 주로 담수산 수생식물의 줄기나 육지산 식물의 장과를 먹지만 수생곤충과 민물에 사는 작은 동물도 잡아먹는다. 구북구의 아이슬란드에서 시베리아에 걸친 툰드라지대에서 번식하고, 지중해, 인도 북부 및 한국과 일본 등지에서 겨울을 난다. 한국에서는 1968년 혹고니와 함께 천연기념물 제201호로 지정되었다. 라고 두산 백과사전에 나와있습니다.
