물총새 - 물총새의 종류는 약 90종으로 알려져 있다. 온대지역과 열대지역에 걸쳐분포하며 대부분의 종류는 아열대지역에서 서식한다. 물총새의 몸길이는 약 15cm이다. 몸의 윗면은 광택이 나는 청록색이다. 턱 밑과 멱은 흰색이나 다소 누런 갈색을 띤다. 목 옆면에는 밤색과 흰색 얼룩이 있다. 부리는 검고 암컷의 아랫부리는 붉다. 다리는 진홍색이며 앞발가락 3개는 붙어 있다. 어른새의 여름깃은 1~3월에 불완전하게 털갈이한다. 물가에 살며 여름에는 내륙, 겨울에는 바닷가에서 볼 수 있다. 저수지 주변 둑이나 개울가에 번식하는 흔한 여름새였으나 한때 농약을 마구 뿌려 개체수가 크게 줄어들기도 하였다. 중부 이남에서는 일부가 겨울을 나는 보기 드문 겨울새이기도 하다.

3월 상순~8월 상순에 물가 흙벼랑이나 언덕에 구멍을 파서 둥지를 틀고 물고기 뼈를 토해내서 알자리를 마련한다. 한배에 4∼7개의 둥글고 흰 알을 낳는데, 알을 품는 기간은 약 20일, 새끼를 먹여 기르는 기간은 약 25일이다.
물총새는 먹이를 잡기위해서 연못가에 나뭇가지나 바위 등지에 망대(望臺)를 가지고 있다. 수면에서 1~1.5m의 높이에 자리를 잡고 기다렸다가 수면에 물고기가 지나가면 물속으로 뛰어들어 큰부리로 잡아챈다. 먹이의 크기는 2~5cm 가량의 작은 물고기인데 뼈가 걸리지 않도록 반드시 머리부터 삼킨다. 주로 민물고기를 잡아먹지만 양서류·곤충·갑각류 따위도 잡아먹는다. 한국·일본·사할린섬·타이완·중국·아무르·몽골·인도차이나·말레이반도·인도 등지에 분포한다. 라고 두산 백과사전에 나와 있습니다.
